@make[report] @device(x2700) @majorheading[GEC-CUA Network Special Interest Group] @heading[Minutes of the 13th meeting, held on the 12th March 1986 at the Halls of Residence, University College, London] @tabclear @tabset(1.5inch,4.5inch) @begin[format] @\Present@\Organisation @end[format] @Newpage @section[Minutes of the 11th Meeting] The minutes of the 11th meeting were circulated at the meeting. @section[Matters Arising] There were no matters arising. @section[Proposal to set up a Sub-group to Monitor Support Issues] Peter Halls, University of York, had proposed the setting up of a small sub-group to monitor the progress of issues with GEC. The proposal was accepted by the meeting and the following members agreed. @begin[verbatim] Brian Gilmore - Edinburgh University Peter Halls - York University Ian Campbell - Exeter University Ian Smith - Network Executive Chris Jennings - Travicom PLC Karen Duff - GEC-CL Jenny France - GEC-CL @end[verbatim] It was also agreed that the sub-group would co-opt other members for short periods if specific problems with a site had to be taken up. The first meeting will be on the 31st April in London. @section[Hardware and Software Progress with PSE Products] Karen Duff (GEC) described the software release strategy for both Type 2 and Type 3 PSE software. A copy of her slides are included as Appendix A. The main points were - @begin[itemize] Current release Type 2 Release 6 (T2R6) with a T2R6J, ie. including the 'JNT enhancements' within a month. Then in May, T2R7 - maintenance release. T2R7J follows in June/July. The base Type 3 produced is in internal field trials with an actual field trial in April/May. The Type 3 second release is expected in the autumn. @end[itemize] There was a timely discussion about the inclusion of the JNT enhancements in Type 3. @section[Network Management] An announcement of a new Network Management package was also made. The package is designed to run on a Series 21, a Unix based machine - see slides. @section[On Specific points] @begin[enumerate] 48K links - Fix in T2R7 with microcode changes and a bug in L2 partially fixed. Trapped Process Errors - GEC were interested in feedback on this problem and it was apparent that a large proportion of the meeting had had problems. There are clearly a number of distinct causes for the microcode to 'give-up' and although some problems had been found in T2R7 some remained. The question of whether error thresholds were correct and whether inactive links should be held closed was to be considered by GEC. @flushright{**Action - GEC} SIRs - There are currently 88 unduplicated SIRs in the Bulletin. T2R7 clears about 30 SIRs. Bulletin - There was some feeling that it was difficult to find individual SIRs with the new bulletin format. It was suggested to GEC that a proper cross reference was now needed. @flushright(**Action - K. Duff) Logging - Now that JANET was consistently collecting log files for analysis a number of faults had shown up, they included:- @begin[itemize] Lose 30 minutes of log after midnight. On IPL, the current 512 bytes is lost. Over multiple IPLs, only one tends to be logged. Problems with changing log discs @end[itemize] The SIR reporting a fault with the circular buffer has been fixed in T2R6 and the log file now contains the last 'n' megabytes rather than the first 'n' megabytes. Ian Smith agreed to list the faults. @flushright[**Action - I. Smith] Self Powered Modems - GEC were asked to comment on the use of self powered modems, no comment was made but Ian Campbell said that he had successfully used 'Black Box' ones although they were expensive. @end[enumerate] @section[Progress with Desired Enhancements] Graham Wilson of GEC-CL gave a presentation on the status of desired enhancements. His slide is copied in Appendix B. @section[Points Arising] He questioned the meaning of N17 @flushright{**Action - B. Gilmore} Load sharing will not be locally configurable - comments? @flushright{**Action - ALL} Call Redirection - specification needed (eg. should it take effect on failed call caused by a lack of available LCNs?) @flushright(**Action - Ian Smith) @begin[itemize] X.25 (1984) GEC wished to tie this up with the production of L3 on the KCC/MCC board. No decision on the use of X.25/LLCZ for ethernet yet. No timescale for X.29 (1984) for PCC. 1st Product 1987. GEC said that they had not received the JNT spec of what is required in X.24 (84). @flushright(**Action - D. Gillman & I. Smith) @end[itemize] @section[User Presentation] Peter Halls (York University) gave a presentation on the features of the JNT enhancements, his slides are reproduced as Appendix C. @section[Summary of Main Features] @begin[verbatim] Console messages: date and time stamp. Change date and time. List all current calls. G/W - title to address mapping - change welcome message -> Monitor of gateway calls. Load Sharing. @end[verbatim] There is still no agreement on which features will be present in Type 3 software. Peter Lane agreed to examine the situation. @flushright (**Action - P. Lane) @section{Any other Business} Alan McMillan (Glasgow University) suggested that the password for the system should be localy configurable, this being essential when remote access is provided. He also suggested that the Network Management Address should be locally configurable. @flushright (**Action - GEC) @section{Date of Next Meeting} November 12th UCL at 11.00 a.m. @flushright{B. A. C.
