Conversion from NSI to X25 - DRAFT 4 ========================== The Conversion from NSI to X25 will be done in 3 phases, they are:- Phase 1: Establishment of an X25 Service. May & June Links from the existing ERCC GEC 4065 will be moved to the 4190 An FEP from both the 2972 and 2988 will be moved onto the 4190 All TCPs without RJE devices will be moved onto the 4190. The second 4190 will be brought into service. Phase 2: Majority of services provided by X25 July & August All existing hosts on NSI will be moved to X25 (or Ring). All remaining Edinburgh TCPs will be moved to X25. At the endo of this period, Node 9 will be taken out of Service. Phase 3: Final rundown of the NSI Network September - December The remaining 1130 packages will be converted/replaced/disconnected. The 11/40 in the Appleton Tower will be taken out of service when the route to Newcastle is established via FTP, PSS/Serc. A detailed description of the Phases follow Phase 1: Establishment of an X25 Service DATE Stage Action Who? ====== ===== ====== ==== KB CPSE 1st/2nd Wk May KB 0 Move 11/60 downstairs & install NB: Requires Ring in CPSE room RAFC KB 0b Install old 'AI' TCP beside JNT PAD and get links ready. CY 3rd/4th Wk May KB 1 Install 4190 & get working GEC 4th May/1st June KB 2 Move Links from 4065 to 4190 CY/JL Xgate, Vax, 11/40, 11/34: Modem Sims->Line Cards Pad : Line Card ->Modem Sim Strathclyde : Modem unchanged Memex : Modem Sim -> Line Card Old 'AI' TCP : -> Line Cards (From Dev2) (Abro, Arcus) : -> Line card & Cable KB 3 Move T14 (N9) to N6 & drop one 2988 Link on N9 JL/Bush KB 4 Move DQS11E from N9 to FE2 on 2972 JL/DEC KB 4a Move T23 from DQS onto a UMCZ80 line JL KB 4b Move Strathclyde Node-2988 Link onto N6 DQS JL/Str. NB: Together with KB 3 frees up a 2988 FEP 2nd/3rd wk June KB 5 Change one Bush FEP to X25 & attach to CPSE JL/BG KB 6 Change FE2 (2972) to X25 & attach to CPSE JL/CY/BG KB 7 Test out above with ERTE & TCP on Dev Machine BG/SS/GH 3rd/4th Wk June KB 8 Move Forrestry to X25 & attach to CPSE JL/GH NB: Route thru' Xgate must be fully working JB KB 9 Move Bush & Engin. TCP onto CPSE GH/JL/Bush KB10 Move any other non-LP TCP onto CPSE GH/JL eg, Pollock,SIAE,IGS,Ersk,Lib,ATB1,CS-at2 NB: Approx 18 connections needed at this stage CY KB11 Move a TCP with LP onto CPSE GH/JL eg. Chemistry or George Sq. George Sq. CPSE End June GS 1 Install & get working GEC 1st wk July GS 2 Hardware Teaching on switch CD 2nd wk July GS 3 Install link between KB Cpse & GS CPSE JL NB: May be a problem with bandwidth ? CY 3rd/4th Wk July GS 4 Move a TCP from KB CPSE to GS CPSE JL GS 5 Move any other GS TCP's from KB CPSE to GS JL/CY GS 6 Redo multiplexors into 19.2kb links as they CY are freed GS 7 Connect 2nd Link from 2972 & 2988 Feps to CPSE BG/JL NB: Requires that 2 line operation is working BG/JB Notes/Problems The time scales of the two switches are largely independant, the crutial timing is that of the KB CPSE. a) Which printers do CSVAX & FSTORE directly communicate with as this will STOP working when the TCP is on X25. b) When will the new RJE control be operational on EMAS? c) Line speeds to FEPs to be running at 19.2kb by KB10 & GS5 e) To be purchased:- 1) 11/44 for Bush 2) Store & Line cards for TCPs 3) Portable TU58s for Loading TCPs Phase 2: Majority of Services Provided by X25 DATE Stage Action Who? ====== ===== ====== ==== July P2 1 Create new JCMB TCP with just terminals & attach to switch (load by TU58 ?) JL/GH P2 2 Move Filestore onto Ring SH/JL NB: Probably onto single char i/f P2 3 Install York FE on EEVAX, connect to KB switch KF/JL When Service is properly established:- Install York FE on MCSU & attach to GS switch Install York FE on MRC Vax & attach to KB sw. NB: This is dependant on the order in which the York FEs are purchased, hence subject to change P2 4 Move INFO onto X25 SC/BG/JL NB: All remaining NSI Hosts cut off at this point from INFO Through routing from Ring TCPs->Info required ERCVAX to be able to respond to INFO Polls BM Late July/Aug P2 5 Move CS Vax onto KB switch GB August P2 6 Move any TCPs with just a LP onto switch NB: Requires the GS Switch to be operational at this point. P2 7 Move all other TCPs, except sdvs&sfac to switch NB: Emas RJE support MUST be present by here. P2 8 The second EMAS Feps should be shifted to X25 NB: Load sharing considerations at this point. NSI-RJE access to 2972 via Ring & FE4 2988 via 2nd port of NSI FEP P2 9 Move Cassette Reader& PR reader from SDVS to SFAC and convert to X25 P2 10 Activate Ring I/F on Node 6 and switch off Node 9 BG At this stage, only Mod1,App.Tw.T14,Str. & 88 Link (?) should be left on Node 6. Phase 3 - Final rundown of NSI Network To be Timed. Any comments etc to B. Gilmore B. Gilmore May 1983
