Edinburgh Regional Computing Centre ----------------------------------- For the attention of the Edinburgh Computer Users Committee ----------------------------------------------------------- Report on Communications ------------------------ TCPs The number of terminals on the Library TCP has been increased from ---- 32 to 48. A fault which has been causing spurious 'Terminal Violations' while using the screen editors has been found and fixed. FEPs The FEPs on the 2988 have been crashing recently due to a problem ---- with the new 2900 hardware. The FEPs should no longer actually crash but there is still an unresolved problem with the hardware. PSS The service has been very stable. --- Nodes The large increase in users during this term has overloaded both ----- of our local Nodes. This has meant that users have seen a poor response caused partially by network delays and in extreme cases a loss of the connection to the Host. In order to preserve the service, the network was restructured with a 2972 FEP connected directly to Node 6 rather than the Cambridge Ring, in addition, a smaller PDP11 has been put into service as a third FEP. Unfortuantly these changes have caused some hardware problems in Node 6 and this has meant that the Node has been taken out of service for most lunchtimes in the past couple of weeks. X25 An X25 TCP (called a PAD) has been delivered and is being tested. --- B. Gilmore Nov. 1982
