@Section(OVERVIEW) The filestore described here is a stand-alone filing system which provides services to a number of computers within the Department of Computer Science at Edinburgh University. The filestore software is designed so that a fairly simple client system can make use of it, and thus provide a more comprehensive filing system to its users than would otherwise be possible. In particular the maintenance of directories and the allocation of space on the disks are entirely handled by the filestore. This chapter describes the configuration of the filestore and the network of which it is a part, gives an overview of the facilities which the filestore provides, describes in detail how the filestore is used by clients (the protocol of requests and responses and their formats, the restrictions and defaults), describes the system control commands which are provided for system management, gives details of the error-messages which the filestore produces and the actions taken and finally describes how the requests from the clients are answered. In the last section, you will find a list of directories and their owners. It can be quiet useful when you need to find out where to find some informations on Graphics, some of the packages as EDWIN or any other general information on APM.
