This directory contains files related to sundry operating systems and utilities created for them. * APM/ has a number of directories in it related to the Fred-machines and the original (non-"mouse") system which ran on them. * apm_filestore/ has extracts from some of the backups of the CS filestores. They're neither as complete as we would have liked, due partly to space issues on and for storage of the tapes, and because the backups we do have contain a mixture of personal data alongside "departmental" files which still needs to be untangled. * APM-filestore/ contains code for the versions of the CS filestores which ran on the Fred-machines. Unfortunately the original Interdata code appears to be lost. * APM-gdmr/ has some more filestore backup extracts * APM-ls-RAC.sanitised contains a listing of the contents of the filestore backups which exist. * apm_wd_jan06.doc * apm_wd.pdf * apm_wd.txt -- these three files contain the "APM working documents" in various formats. They essentially describe the inners of the APMs aka Fred-machines. * deimos/ Deimos is the microkernel operating system running on PDP-11 systems, which was used to run FEPs (Front End Processors) as well as remote stations, node processors etc. * emas/ contains a variety of files and directories related to EMAS, both the 4/75 version and the 2900 version. * fuzzball/ "The Fuzzball is an operating system and applications library designed for the PDP11 family of computers." See Dave Mills's paper in the directory for a full description. It was later used in the ARPANET infrastructure and for some of the NTP stratum-0 servers. * gdmr-tcp-ip/ contains the VMS version of GDMR's semi-portable TCP/IP stack, including the TCPDRIVER custom pseudo-device driver which was written because mailboxes were too slow. * icl7502/ contains items pertaining to the ICL-7502 "mini-computer" which was used mainly as a full-screen editing station attached to the (Interdata) filestore. * lcfg/ has a brief description of the LCFG system-configuration system as used in CS and Informatics, a pointer to more complete information, and a historical Sun-vintage "object". * mouses/ contains a description of computing at Moray House College (before it merged with the University of Edinburgh), and files pertaining to the "mouses" operating system that was written there and later ported to the Data Curator machine. (Note that this is completely different from the "Mouse" or "Moose" OS for the Fred-machines, as used by the hierarchical filestores.) * pdp915/ -- the PDP-9 and PDP-15/20 were latterly used for second-year UG low-level programming. This directory has various Imp and assembly-language sources. * vax-vms/ has the sources for some utilities which were written for VMS. * VMS-filestore/ contains the code for the "filestore" which ran on ECSVAX and interfaced to its filesystem using 1976-spec filestore protocol.
