GPM was originally conceived by C. Strachey, in the '60s.
He wrote a PL/I program that implemented the GPM algorithms.
Win Janssen translated this to C in 1992 or so. Adriaan
de Groot hacked at it until it looked like nice C,
modularised it and placed it under GNU autoconf control.
