$a left=11; dcpi=12; invert=0; pageno=1 $l0 Instructions for the use of the HP 7221 plotters ================================================ The HP 7221 plotters are connected to VAX, and there is a Visual 200 terminal connected to the plotter. The terminal speed, and plotter speeds may not be altered. Plotter B can be used on the RCO or SERC network if it is plugged into the appropriate line in the Charles Room. SWITCHING ON : ============== The plotters are usualy left switched on, but if they fail to work the following should be checked. a) Are the sockets at the power distribution box at the wall switched on? b) Is the plotter switched on? (switch on the right below the pen holders) c) Is the terminal switched on? (switch on the right hand side of screen) d) The plotter should not be left in the CHART LOAD state. Press the CHART HOLD button if the light in the CHART LOAD button is on. e) The plotter must be on line! - it is easy to hit the standby button. Of the buttons marked 'STBY', 'LOCAL' and 'ON LINE' the light should be ON in the button marked 'ON LINE' and off in all the others. If this is not the case, press the 'ON LINE' button. SWITCHING OFF : =============== The plotter and terminal are normally left on during the day, and if they are switched off at night they should only be put off at the power distribution point on the wall. ADDING THE PAPER : ================== To add paper to the plotter, press the button marked 'CHART LOAD'. This releases the electrostatic hold, and allows you to place paper on the plotter bed. Note that the plotter will not respond while it is in the 'CHART LOAD' state. After the paper has been put in, press the 'CHART HOLD' button. It should also be noted that different programs assume different orientations for A4 paper, and the user should check this if he is not sure. The default is that it will have its longer side on the bottom of the plotter bed, thus having the same aspect ratio as A3 paper. REMOVING THE PAPER : ==================== To remove the paper press the 'CHAR LOAD' button again. The 'CHART HOLD' button should be pressed if you are not going to add some more paper, as the plotter can otherwise 'hang'. COLOURS: ======== All of the colours are selected by the EDWIN routine SET COLOUR. Note that programs using more than 4 colours will also work on the model 7221 plotters, and the user is asked to change the pens as required. The following is the mapping of colours to slots : Slot no. Edwin no. Colour -------- --------- ------ 0 0 Puts the pen away 1 4 Red 2 3 Green 3 2 Blue 4 1 Black ABORTING A PLOT : ================= The following is the suggested sequence for aborting a plot. a) Press the button on the plotter marked 'STBY'. b) Press ^Y, ^C, ESC etc to abort the program. c) Press the button on the plotter marked 'ON LINE'. d) Press the 'ENTER' button, and then the button beside the empty pen slot. (which puts the pen away) The terminal is now back to being a normal terminal. CHANGING PENS DURING A PLOT : ============================= If a large plot is being made, and the pens show signs of running out, the following sequence allows them to be changed without loosing any of the plot. a) Press ^S on the terminal. b) Press the button marked ENTER. Then press the pen select button of the slot which is currently empty. (The pen will be put away). c) Change the pen. d) Press the pen select button again to pick up the new pen. e) Press ^Q on the terminal. (The plotting will resume). $n $a left=9 $l0 Instructions for the use of the HP 7580 plotter =============================================== SWITCHING ON : ============== Give the VAX command: ALLOCATE 7580 Switch on the plotter at the mains switch marked 'LINE', which is below the pen holder. The plotter should rotate its pens, and end up with only the CHART UNLOAD button lit (+ green mains neon). Leave the plotter switched on during the day. SWITCHING OFF : =============== Just put off the mains switch. (Any paper will fall out at this point!) CHANGING PENS : =============== The default pens are either 0.3mm felt pens or roller ball pens (the latter are only available in 4 colours). Users who wish to use liquid ink pens or 0.7mm felt pens should contact JGH. If you require to change a pen, lift the pen cartridge up to remove it, the pens just clip into the cartridge, and then it is placed in the plotter again, and rotated until it locks. ADDING THE PAPER : ================== To add paper (when the CHART UNLOAD button is lit, ie. just switched on). Enter the sheet of paper so that there is about an equal amount on either side of the plotter, move it leftwards till the paper is against the paper stops (bits of black plastic) at the front and back of the plotter. The right hand paper stop should be moved so that the arrow points at the right hand edge of the paper. This is done by lifting the plastic cover, and pressing down on the paper stop at the back. It can then be slid in either direction, (while it is pressed). At present the drawing is always scaled to fit the paper which is put in. Telling any program the size will correct the aspect ratio of the picture. A3 paper is 40 cm x 28 cm, and the large sheets are 90 cm x 60 cm. Press CHART HOLD and then REMOTE to hold the paper and allow the plotter to continue. REMOVING THE PAPER : ==================== If the VIEW button is not lit, then press VIEW. Press CHART UNLOAD The paper will then fall out. $n$l0 COLOURS: ======== All of the colours are selected by the EDWIN routine SET COLOUR. If this is done the following commands will be useful: HAZELTINEINIT When the terminal is first switched on the auxiliary port is enabled. This command disables it, and should be given after the terminal is switched on, but before the plotter is switched on. BEGINPLOTS This command ensures that the EDWIN directory is at the top of the search directory list. It (might be?) is necessary to issue this command before any plots are made. ENDPLOTS This command removes the EDWIN directory from the search list so that other programs (such as GIMMS) can be used. The above commands are made available by: INSERT ECSLIB.EDWIN$_PLOTUTILY
